About Leeds Beckett University
Leeds Beckett University is a public university in West Yorkshire. The university has a campus in Leeds city centre and in Headingley. It was previously known as Leeds Polytechnic and then Leeds Metropolitan University before taking its current name, in reference to the Beckett Park campus, in 2014. The university can be traced back to the Leeds Mechanics Institute, which was founded in 1824. This institute became several different colleges through the years, finally gaining University status after new legislation in 1992. Around 28,000 students attend.
The City Centre Campus is the main area of the university, comprised of several locations near the northern Inner Ring Road. One of these is the Broadcasting Tower, with its distinct architecture and colour. The high-rise student accommodation facilities are the tallest buildings in the northern city centre. The Beckett Park Campus is situated in the suburb of Headingley, around 2 miles away from the city centre. Many of the buildings are Grade II listed, centred around a large lawn called The Acre. Carnegie Village student accommodation was built in 2010.
