About York Dungeon
Following in the footsteps of London Dungeon, York Dungeon opened in 1986 as an interactive horror attraction based on historical facts. It is more of an actor-led experience than a museum. York Dungeon is a part of the Merlin Entertainments Group, which operates more than 100 other tourist attractions across 27 countries. The tours of York Dungeon journey through the darker side of 2000 years of history in York. The walkthrough experience incorporates engaging scene sets and special effects along with actor performances to bring horrible history to life. Aspects of the tour can be a little scary, gory, and even funny, if you enjoy gallows humour. Despite focusing on the murkier elements of local history, tours can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.
While entry for children is at the discretion of parents or guardians, York Dungeon recommends that children should be 8 years old and above to visit the attraction, as younger children can be sensitive to the dark and loud noises. There are no rides in York Dungeon, but it does have 360-degree theatrical sets, talented actors, and gripping storytelling. The 10 shows range from the time of the Vikings through the plague, Yorkshire hangman William Curry, the gunpowder plot, the tortures of the Castle dungeon, the criminal court and executions, and the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin. The final stop on the tour is the Ye Old Yorke Inn tavern, where visitors can buy drinks and souvenirs in the gift shop area. York Dungeon sometimes hosts special events like the Rat Cafe evening tea experience with rats from Yorkshire Rat Club.
